Precision Balances
Precision balances, also known as precision scales or top-loading balances, are part of the RADWAG laboratory balances range designed for fast and accurate weighing with a readability from 1 mg (0.001 g) to 1 g. With a maximum capacity from 200 g up to 120 kg, they are suitable both for weighing small samples in the laboratory and for heavier loads in production and quality control.
What is a precision balance?
A precision balance is an electronic balance that determines the mass of a sample with high accuracy and repeatability. It fills the gap between highly sensitive analytical balances (readability of 0.1 mg or better) and industrial scales. Compared with an analytical balance, a precision balance offers a higher capacity and shorter stabilization time, which makes it the standard choice for routine weighing. If your application requires readability at microgram level, see our microbalances and ultra-microbalances.
Applications of precision balances
- sample and reagent preparation in research and testing laboratories,
- recipe formulation and ingredient control in the pharmaceutical, chemical, cosmetic and food industries,
- quality control, checkweighing, piece counting and percent weighing,
- density determination of solids and liquids with an optional density kit available among precision balance accessories,
- weighing in education, workshops and production lines.
For moisture content determination, a dedicated moisture analyzer is a better choice, and for 100% control of packed products we recommend checkweighers.
How to choose a precision balance?
- Readability [d] – the smallest mass difference displayed by the balance. The more accurate the result you need, the smaller the readability should be.
- Maximum capacity [Max] – choose a capacity with a safe margin that also includes the mass of the weighing container. For loads above 120 kg, consider platform scales or high resolution HRP scales.
- Calibration – internal adjustment runs automatically (for example after a temperature change), while external adjustment requires a reference weight. Check our mass standards for routine performance tests.
- Legal for trade verification – required when weighing results are used for commercial transactions or in regulated processes.
- Connectivity and data management – depending on the model: USB, RS232, Ethernet or Wi-Fi®, GLP and ISO compliant reports and integration with RADWAG weighing software.
- Working environment – place the balance on a stable surface, ideally an anti-vibration weighing table. For production areas, choose balances with a robust housing and a suitable IP rating.

FAQ – precision balances
What is the difference between a precision balance and an analytical balance?
An analytical balance has a readability of 0.1 mg or better, a draft shield and a capacity usually limited to a few hundred grams. A precision balance has a readability from 1 mg to 1 g, a much higher capacity (up to 120 kg in the RADWAG range) and a shorter stabilization time.
How accurate is a precision balance?
RADWAG precision balances have a readability from 1 mg (0.001 g) to 1 g. The actual accuracy of the result also depends on repeatability, ambient conditions, regular adjustment and correct use of the balance.
How often should a precision balance be calibrated?
It depends on how intensively the balance is used and on your quality requirements, for example ISO 9001 or GLP. A routine check with a reference weight is usually performed daily or before a series of measurements, and calibration by an accredited laboratory is typically carried out once a year.
What is internal adjustment?
Internal adjustment is an automatic process that uses a reference weight built into the balance. It can be triggered by a temperature change or a set time interval, so the balance stays accurate without the need for an external weight.
Are precision balances legal for trade?
Selected RADWAG precision balances are available in verified versions that can be used for commercial transactions and in regulated processes. Check the specification of the chosen model or contact our sales team.
