Weighing Modules

RADWAG weighing modules are compact weighing mechanisms with measuring electronics, designed for integration into machines, production lines and automated systems. The range includes modules with a readability from 1 µg to 0.1 g and a maximum capacity from 5.1 g to 35 kg – from MMYA microbalance modules, through precise Y and R series modules for laboratory and multi-lane systems, to MWLH and MWMH industrial modules in stainless steel housings with protection up to IP 69K. The modules communicate directly with a PLC or computer and can work with RADWAG weighing terminals when needed. All modules are designed and manufactured by RADWAG in Poland.

What is a weighing module?

A weighing module is a scale reduced to what is essential for measurement: a weighing mechanism, electronics and a communication interface. It has no display or keypad, which makes it small and easy to install inside a device. The weighing result goes directly to the machine's control system, which uses it to dose, sort or reject products, for example. At the same time, the module offers metrological performance close to that of laboratory balances – with a repeatability from 1.6 µg in MMYA modules.

Precision modules and industrial modules

  • MMYA, Y and R precision modules – in aluminium housings with IP 43 protection (MMYA: IP 32), for use in clean, dry rooms. A readability from 1 µg to 0.1 g and narrow housings – from 25 mm to 115 mm – make it possible to build automated weighing stations in laboratories, inspection devices for small parts and multi-lane systems in which several modules work side by side.
  • MWLH and MWMH industrial modules – in stainless steel housings with IP 65 protection (MWMH also IP 69K), with electromagnetic force compensation. The MWLH weighs loads up to 35 kg with a readability from 0.01 g, while the MWMH, thanks to its resistance to a preload of several kilograms, can work with the user's own pan or conveyor in fast dynamic processes.

Communication, control and adjustment

R series modules communicate via RS232, Y series modules via RS232 and Ethernet TCP/IP, and MWLH modules additionally support RS485 and the Modbus TCP/IP, PROFIBUS and PROFINET industrial protocols. Digital inputs and outputs (optional in Y, standard in MWLH and MWMH) allow external devices to be controlled without a computer. If the operator needs to see the result or operate the module manually, it can be connected to a terminal: the 5Y Terminal for Y series modules, the R Terminal (WDM-8) for R series modules and the PUE HY10 terminal for MWLH modules.

MMYA, Y and R2 modules feature internal adjustment – a built-in weight corrects the sensitivity without operator intervention, e.g. after a temperature change. R1, MPS.T.R1, MWLH and MWMH modules are adjusted externally using mass standards.

Applications of weighing modules

  • laboratory automation – robotic weighing stations, e.g. for filter weighing,
  • pharmaceutical industry – weight control of tablets, capsules and small doses in production and laboratory equipment (pharma and biotech solutions),
  • dosing and filling – controlling dosing units based on the weighing result,
  • quality control on production lines – weighing every item and rejecting out-of-tolerance products,
  • multi-lane systems – several narrow modules weighing products on adjacent lanes in parallel,
  • food industry – fast dynamic weighing in washdown environments (MWMH).

How to choose a weighing module?

  • Maximum capacity and readability – take into account the weight of the product together with the pan or fixture it rests on. For micrograms choose MMYA, for milligrams the MAS modules (Y and R), for several kilograms the MPS modules, and up to 35 kg the MWLH.
  • Installation space – in multi-lane systems the module width matters: 25 mm (MPS.T.R1), 70 mm (MAS.2M.Y, MPS.M) or 115 mm (MAS.Y).
  • Working environment – Y and R modules for dry, clean rooms, MWLH for industrial conditions (IP 65), MWMH for high-pressure washdown (IP 69K).
  • Measurement speed – for dynamic processes choose the MWMH with a stabilisation time from 0.1 s.
  • Communication – RS232 (R), Ethernet TCP/IP (Y, MWMH) or PROFIBUS and PROFINET fieldbuses (MWLH).
  • Adjustment – internal adjustment makes it easier to maintain accuracy at changing temperatures. External adjustment requires access to the pan and mass standards.
  • Legal metrology – MWMH modules are OIML class III devices.

FAQ – weighing modules

What is the difference between a weighing module and a scale?

A weighing module has no display or keypad. It is designed to be built into a machine or automation system and sends the weighing result directly to a PLC or computer. This makes it smaller than a scale and allows it to be installed where a conventional scale would not fit.

How do I connect a weighing module to a PLC or computer?

All modules have an RS232 interface. Y series and MWMH modules also have Ethernet, and the MWLH additionally supports RS485, Modbus TCP/IP, PROFIBUS and PROFINET. Digital inputs and outputs can be used, for example, to trigger a measurement or control a dosing valve.

Does a weighing module need a terminal?

No. A module can work on its own, controlled by a PLC or computer. If you need to display the result or operate the module manually, Y series modules work with the 5Y Terminal, R series modules with the R Terminal (WDM-8), and MWLH modules with the PUE HY10 terminal.

What is the difference between internal and external adjustment?

With internal adjustment, the module corrects its sensitivity using a built-in weight – automatically or on command, without removing the product from the line. With external adjustment, a mass standard has to be placed on the pan. Internal adjustment is available in MMYA modules, Y series modules and R2 modules.

Are weighing modules suitable for multi-lane systems?

Yes. MPS.T.R1 modules are only 25 mm wide, and MAS.2M.Y and MPS.M modules 70 mm. This allows several modules to be placed side by side to weigh products on adjacent lanes in parallel.

Can weighing modules operate in washdown environments?

Yes – the industrial modules. MWLH modules have a stainless steel housing with IP 65 protection, and MWMH modules IP 65 and IP 69K, so they can be washed with high-pressure water. Y and R series modules (IP 43) are intended for dry, clean rooms.
